Who are we ?

, also known as the 'BloodRunners are a charitable organisation that delivers blood, emergency medical equipment, drugs and donor organs to the Accident & Emergency hospitals across Southern England at night free of charge whenever and wherever it's urgently needed.

All our members are Volunteers who receive no payment nor mileage allowances for their dedicated work.

The Bloodrunners  has saved many lives since it was formed in 1981.

SERV Kent and Essex was formed on 1st April 2007, when the existing group in Kent assisted Essex in getting started.  The two counties have worked hand in hand since that date, sharing functions and duties alike.
It was decided that the time had come for Essex to split off from Kent and officially go it alone from 1st March 2010, although following committee's decisions to split, the county is already functioning mostly independantly of Kent. And as from the 1st November 2011 Serv Essex  become an independent charity known as the Essex Voluntary Blood Service

Essex BloodRunners has approximately 50 active members ready and waiting to assist those in need.

How It All Began...

In April 1981 Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers was set up to supply a quick and reliable means of Transporting Emergency Blood and Blood Products to the hospitals and medical facilities at night. Prior to SERV the only means available to hospitals, doctors and other medical establishments for the transport of emergency blood supplies at night were the following:

Taxis: The disadvantage was reliability, costs and time constraints.

Police and Ambulance: Although fast and able to respond quickly, the disadvantage was it removed a much-needed emergency vehicle from service.

Paid Courier Service: Very limited availability during the night. High cost for service and poor reliability.

National Blood Transfusion Service: Their own vehicles are used during the day however availability during the night maybe limited and hospitals were charged for the service.

All the  volunteer blood groups supplie this service FREE of any charge, thus freeing up much-needed funds for improved patient care and other facilities within the hospital.
